Millard Fillmore Hamilton came to Quilcene in the 1880’s. With his business partner Squire McArdle, he platted the original Quilcene townsite.

Legend has it that Mr. Hamilton purchased 80 acres from the Native American widow of Joe White in 1883, for the going market rate of $1/acre.
On a portion of that gently sloping riverside land, Hamilton built the French 2nd Empire 17-room Victorian home that WJ and Grace Worthington later bought and raised their family in.
This remarkable home still stands, now called the Worthington Mansion.
